Carbon sequestration in soils: some cautions amidst optimism
نویسنده
چکیده
A sink for atmospheric carbon (i.e., CO2) in soils may derive from the application of conservation tillage and the regrowth of native vegetation on abandoned agricultural land. Accumulations of soil organic matter on these lands could offset emissions of CO2 from fossil fuel combustion, in the context of the Kyoto protocol. The rate of accumulation of soil organic matter is often higher on fertilized fields, but this carries a carbon “cost” that is seldom assessed in the form of CO2 emissions during the production and application of inorganic fertilizer. Irrigation of semiarid lands may also produce a sink for carbon in plant biomass, but its contribution to a sink for carbon in soils must be discounted by CO2 that is emitted when energy is used to pump irrigation water and when CaCO3 precipitates in the soil profile. No net sink for carbon is likely to accompany the use of manure on agricultural lands. © 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Estimation of Soil Carbon Sequestration Rate in Steppes (Case Study: Saveh Rudshur Steppes)
Since Renaissance, the natural ecosystems have fallen into a complete state ofdisarray due to the rise in the amount of carbon dioxide. Soil, the unsparing stuff, is one of themajor sources of carbon storage, and plays a paramount role in the global equilibrium ofcarbon as well as carbon sequestration. Given that Iran is benefiting from vast steppes, therate of carbon sequestration in them dese...

Climate change due to increasing the level of greenhouse gases including CO2 is the main environmental issue of the world in the new century. One of the effective way for reducing atmospheric CO2 is carbon sequestration by plants and soils. A vast area of Iran has desert condition with special adapted plant species in which can be devoted for carbon sequestration. Hammada salicornica as a shrub...

Organic carbon is the most important component of terrestrial ecosystems and any change in its abundance can have a major impact on the processes that take place in ecosystem. The aim of this study was to estimate carbon sequestration in three different elevations (200 to 1200 m from sea level) and according to vegetation type in the Khairoodkenar forest. The highest carbon sequestration was ob...
متن کاملComparison of Carbon and Nitrogen Sequestration in Soils Under Plantations, Natural Forest and Agricultural Farm Land Uses in Arjan Plain in the Fars Province
The carbon sequestaration by plants and soil is one of the easiest and the most econimical ways to reduce atmosphere carbon. This study was conducted on the planted land use of Fraxinus rotundifolia, Cupressus arizonica, obinia pseudoacacia L., Elaeagnus angustifolia, Cedrus libani, and Quercus brantii (persica) in the Arjan plain of Fars province. For each plantation land use, there were three...
متن کاملSubmicron structures provide preferential spots for carbon and nitrogen sequestration in soils
The sequestration of carbon and nitrogen by clay-sized particles in soils is well established, and clay content or mineral surface area has been used to estimate the sequestration potential of soils. Here, via incubation of a sieved (<2 mm) topsoil with labelled litter, we find that only some of the clay-sized surfaces bind organic matter (OM). Surprisingly, <19% of the visible mineral areas sh...
